RUC
The RUC, Royal Ulster Constabulary, was established in 1922. Up until
March 1970 the size of the RUC never exceeded 3,500 members, but this was
reassessed in the light of the Troubles, and by 1995 membership stood
at 8,489. The RUC has always been composed mainly from members of the
pro-British Protestant community. In 1992, only 7.78% of the full-time
force were Catholic, and an even smaller percentage than this could be
found in the reserve forces.
- regular: 8,489
- part-time reserve: 1,765
- full-time reserve: 3,202
TOTAL: 13,183
